Comanche Lookout Park San Antonio

Downtown San Antonio View from Comanche Lookout Park
Comanche Lookout Park is a treasure to San Antonio and a perfect place to get away and enjoy some short hiking trails, wildlife and beautiful city views. This 96-acre public park owned by the City of San Antonio is site to the fourth highest point in San Antonio with an elevation of 1,340 feet, and includes 4.55 miles of nature hiking trails.

The short trails, ranging from 1 to 2 miles, are dense with trees and offer a shady cover during the hot summer months. The Deer Cross (green) Loop is longer and more scenic and the Library (blue) Loop leads you up to the amphitheater, playground, library, and a scenic pond with a bridge. The park is full of wildlife including songbirds and brightly colored cardinals.  There is also an outdoor classroom, several picnic spots and exercise stations.

Sunset View from Comanche Lookout Park San Antonio
The history of the land at Comanche Lookout Park is quite extensive. Native Americans used the tall hill as a vantage point for warfare and hunting. The Apache, and later, the Comanche Indians dominated the area as they hunted along waterways including nearby Cibolo Creek. The hill was also a prominent landmark for travelers in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The land changed hands over the years and was sold to retired Army Colonel Edward H. Coppock in February 1923 for $6,000. Coppock was a romantic and history aficionado, and with assistance from his two sons he constructed an extensive compound on the hill including a four-story, medieval-style stone tower. Coppock passed away in 1948 and the project was abandoned. This castle-like tower is still there today.

Comanche Lookout Park is a great place to spend time and will continue to offer San Antonio residents a space to enjoy the outdoors, exercise and take in some of the most beautiful views of the city.
